Achievements and Awards in Sports at Appleford School
Appleford School takes great pride in its sporting achievements. In 2018, the school was honoured with the “Outstanding Sport” (Small School) trophy at the ISA Awards, which celebrate the accomplishments of independent schools across a range of categories. The girls’ netball team has also made its mark on the international stage, competing in the U16 International Netball Tournament in Paris during the 2017/2018 season.
The team finished 8th out of 50 international teams, bringing home a trophy from this prestigious event. Many former students have gone on to represent their countries in rugby union, and some past head boys have earned national champion titles in dressage and motor racing.
The Duke of Edinburgh Award
Beyond sports, Appleford School encourages students to participate in the Duke of Edinburgh Award program. Starting in Year 10, students embark on this nationally recognized program, which presents a series of challenges designed to develop key skills such as communication, leadership, resilience, teamwork, and independent thinking.
To achieve each level (Bronze, Silver, and Gold), students must engage in voluntary service, pursue personal interests, maintain physical fitness, and complete an independent expedition. Bronze and Silver expeditions, typically held on Salisbury Plain, involve overnight stays and small groups of about six students during the summer terms. The school is immensely proud of its high levels of participation and success in this program, which are among the highest in the county.
